Management: A Key Player in the Behavioral Therapy Plan!

Management, what does it mean and why do you need to do it for your pet? Management is a way to shrink your pet’s world by preventing the practice of unwanted behavior. Management techniques include using avoidance, segregation, layering in white noise/sounds, or increasing distance from triggers. The treatment plan from your veterinarian regarding your pet’s behavior problem will be completely useless and your pet will not make any progress if allowed to practice.

For instance, if your dog is allowed to bark at people passing by from in the house but your treatment plan involves working on barking towards people.  The barking will be reinforced as people pass by, strengthening the practice of the barking behavior. This will counteract any progress you have been trying to make in the treatment plan and could even be generalized into other parts of your pet’s life.  Management is detox and detox is essential. Don’t underestimate the power of management as it is just as important as medications, supplements, and the behavior modification plan.
